Vacation Bible School
Every summer, TUMC holds a wonderful discipleship opportunity for children to grow in faith. Vacation Bible School is held for one week each summer, starting on Sunday night, with activities running through Thursday night, and finishing up on Friday night with a family potluck and games. In addition to the children’s activities, the pastor offers an adult class for parents or others wishing to have a one week intensive on some aspect of Christian faith and spiritual formation.
SAM Food Pantry
SAM (Social Action Ministry) food pantry is a ministry of TUMC that serves families all over Tuscola. Unfortunately, in today’s economic environment, people are having to make choices about buying food or paying utility bills or medical bills. The SAM food pantry exists to make that choice a little easier. Staffed by friendly, welcoming persons from a number of the community churches, patrons to the food pantry receive a supply of food, no more often than once a month, appropriate to the number of persons in their home. Food and monetary donations are received by churches and individuals all around Tuscola. A ministry of the church, it is truly supported by the entire community!
North Ward Breakfast Program
An unfortunate circumstance of our current economic climate is that many children in Tuscola are going to school without breakfast. In the 2007-08 school year, 1/3 of the children at North Ward Elementary School (K-4) qualify for free and reduced lunch. A number of years ago, TUMC became aware of children coming to school hungry, and decided to do something about it. Each morning that school is in session, children are greeted by happy volunteers from the church who offer milk or juice, and a breakfast bar. In an effort to keep from distinguishing between students who qualify or not, any child who would like to eat is welcome. We serve around 100 children each morning. The program runs on donations and grants. Additional information is available through the church office, 253-4232.
Peace Meals
Serving the community through acts of mercy is a significant way TUMC members and friends reach out. The church takes two months each year (May and November) to deliver Peace Meals through the Senior Citizens Center. Peace Meals are delivered Monday through Friday, providing a hot meal at a very low price to seniors who may be unable to cook. Volunteer sign up is available at the church several weeks in advance of May and November. For more information, contact the church office, 253-4232.
Missions Local and Abroad
TUMC provides monetary and hands-on support to a number of local mission and social service agencies, as well as responding to mission opportunities beyond our area, even beyond our country! We support two missionary couples: Larry and Kathy Glabe are in ministry through Navigators as they lead ministries on college campuses; Larry and Jane Kies serve in Africa, where Larry is an agricultural advisor and Jane teaches English at Africa University.
